If you're planning a build, a pasture reclamation, or just want to take a wild lot back, the first question is always the same: what's this going to cost? The honest answer is it depends — but "it depends" isn't a useful answer, so here's the real breakdown we use when we quote jobs in the Houston area.
Typical price ranges (per acre)
Ranges reflect typical 2026 pricing in the Houston metro. Your project may fall above or below depending on the factors below.
What actually moves the price
Acreage
The single biggest driver. Larger jobs cost more overall, but usually less per acre because mobilization is spread across the total site.
Vegetation density
Light brush and pasture is at the low end. Heavy woods with mature hardwoods, vines and undergrowth is at the top end — more machine hours and more debris to move.
Tree size & count
A lot with a dozen 8" saplings clears fast. Fifty mature oaks with big root balls takes real time and specialized equipment.
Terrain & access
Flat, dry, easy to reach = cheap. Wet ground, steep slopes, or a driveway too tight for equipment adds cost.
Haul-off vs on-site burn/mulch
Mulching or burning on site is usually cheapest. Full haul-off to a dump costs more but leaves a spotless finish.
Stump handling
Grinding stumps flush costs less than full removal with the root ball. Building pads usually need full removal.
How to budget your project
- Measure your acreage. Even a rough estimate from a plat or Google Maps is a good starting point.
- Decide the finish level: rough clear, mulched, graded, or full build-ready pad.
- Ask about haul-off vs on-site processing — this alone can swing the number 20–30%.
- Get an on-site walk-through. Any quote given without seeing the property is a guess.
